Sister Rosalind Gefre Schools of Massage—

Sister Rosalind Gefre—teaching massage since 1984

ASK SISTER ROSALIND Gefre if she ever intended to be the founder of schools that would instruct in the arts of massage therapy and reflexology, you would hear a resounding “No”! And yet today she is the founder of three Minnesota school campuses, one North Dakota school campus, and two Twin City area clinics of massage and chiropractic. Born in Strasburg, North Dakota in 1929, Sister Rosalind went on to enter the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1948. She become a licensed practical nurse in 1968 and was assigned to Fargo, North Dakota. Sister Rosalind started practicing massage at the Family YMCA in Fargo in 1973. The very first clinic opened in 1983 on Grand Avenue in St. Paul. The founding of the first school came a year later in 1984.

The schools are based on Christian principles and moral foundation. The mission of the school is to promote healing of the body, mind, and spirit through touch. Sister Rosalind believes that God created our bodies to function in health to achieve the fullness of life. The schools seek to work in harmony with God’s plan. We believe that massage therapy instruction should take place in an environment conducive to learning, where an interdisciplinary team of educators can positively interact with students while maintaining high standards of practice. Through these fundamentals the schools strive to produce massage therapists who are compassionate, highly professional, and well-trained.

Currently, the Minnesota Sister Rosalind Gefre Schools of Massage are located in Rochester, Mankato, and West St. Paul, as well as in Fargo, North Dakota. All of the schools offer “Introduction to Swedish Massage” courses and a 750-hour certification program in Professional Massage Therapy. In addition, the West St. Paul campus and the Fargo campus also offer a 300-hour certification program in Reflexology.

Multi-faceted program prepares professional bodyworkers
The Professional Massage Therapy Program provides the necessary skills for graduates to obtain employment in the growing field of massage therapy. Using a closely integrated combination of classroom theory and hands-on lab experience, students learn the essentials of massage therapy including therapeutic treatment plans, applied techniques, and principles of assessment. This provides a sound foundation that develops the expertise necessary for the delivery of safe, effective therapeutic massage services. Although the focus is on maintenance and promotion of health utilizing a variety of bodywork techniques, coursework also includes acute and chronic health topics, ethics, business practices, and other coursework to give the student a well-rounded education. This program qualifies students for state and local licensures as well as national certification. The program emphasizes the techniques, knowledge, and interpersonal skills that will give graduates what they need in a competitive business environment.

The Reflexology Program provides the necessary skills for graduates to obtain employment in the field of reflexology. Reflexology is an ancient art that is regaining popularity in the complementary healthcare system and with traditional medical systems. This program is based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to distinct areas within the body. Using a combination of theory and hands-on practical application, students learn in-depth principles of assessment, hands-on techniques and interpersonal skills that will give graduates a solid base for a developing field.

Sister Rosalind Gefre campuses offer two types of education formats for attending their schools. Students can attend either full time or self-paced. There are two new tracks that start each year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Each track offers both day and evening classes. Programs generally take from 14 to 17 months for full-time students to complete. Self-paced students have up to three years to complete the program. Each of our programs prepares and qualifies students for the national exams. Examples of some of the courses that are offered are Acupressure, Geriatrics and Massage, Massage and Abuse, Massage and Pregnancy, Structural Analysis, Myofascial Release, and Sports Massage.

Sister Rosalind Gefre Schools and Clinics of Massage have been in existence since 1984 and are committed to providing quality education with well-rounded programs for its students. The schools are accredited with IMSTAC—the Integrated Massage and Somatic Therapy Accreditation Counsel—and are constantly striving to improve upon the excellence that Sister Rosalind Gefre Schools and Clinics of Massage has achieved. We have continued to move forward in the massage therapy field and are always looking to expand and raise the quality of therapeutic massage and bodywork.
